God speaks in forms and shadows| poetry by D. E Benson

God speaks in forms and shadows

I did not fall from the sky

or sprout from the depth of a sea

Servio Gbadamosi (Testament)

God speaks in forms

and I am a shadow

in the likeness of thunder

A shadow is the other nature of God

and when the sun rides the day

men with the longevity of smoke wisps

spend their lives chasing His tail

I am a shadow

and I did not fall from the sky

or from God’s lips

A shadow in the likeness of nothing

does not sprout from the depth of  the sea

Carve me a God with another nature,

one in the likeness of nothing;

just like thunder. So that when He speaks

in His language of forms and shadows

I will respond from the depths

of knowing, just like thunder.

Benson is presently pursuing a B.A in English and literature at the University of Nigeria.
